posted @ 17:45... Just returned the other day from Colorado. My sister got married in Denver, where she lives, and the wife & I drove up for the weekend. It's always a fun trip -- sleeping in the car at Palo Duro Canyon State Park's "late arrival" area (Texas), checking out the amazing Bishop's Castle (Colorado), stopping for gas in Amarillo where we saw people digging through garbage cans to find food.
One place in Colorado you've gotta visit is Manitou Springs. I know I'm going to sound like a tourism brochure here, but it's a cool little town with natural soda springs, quaint shops, a penny arcade, a few inexpensive "retro" motels, and some nice people. It's also right next to Pikes Peak, so if you've ever wanted to drive your car all the way up a 14,000-foot-high mountain without the comfort and security of guardrails, that's the place. What's the matter... chicken? ...Me too.
Another interesting place in Colorado is the site of the Ludlow Massacre. It's a place where striking coal miners and their families were brutally killed by an armed militia. I'm not all gung-ho "pro-union" or anything, but this place will make you think a little differently about the issue of unions vs. large powerful companies. But if you know me well, you know I'm not exactly sweet on large powerful companies either.
Do you ever see the signs on the roadway that say "Visitor Information, tune radio to 1510 AM" ? Well, out of curiosity and boredom, we tuned the radio to said frequency in New Mexico and learned all about the history of Clayton, NM. Couldn't tell you anything about the place now, but it helped keep me awake for a while.
In all, a great trip. Sis got married to a truly great guy, and they headed for Maui. My better half & I headed back to this great land we call Texas.
